Yah, cross-hatching is one of my favorite things when it comes to shading. xD It's just so fun with all the layers and layers and paper turning and more layers and omg.
Too bad it doesn't work with paint, hah. That'll be interesting to get used to.
You might try putting a piece of paper under your hand to keep the smudging down. I have the same problem. xD Terrible habit of starting on the left side even though I'm left-handed.
